“Where you look determines how you feel” David Grand, Phd
Brainspotting is a psychotherapeutic theory that has evolved from EMDR
Brainspotting works by understanding what’s happening in our brain, The Neocortex or outer area is our thinking centre where problem solving and rational thought occur. This is the part of our brain that thinks it knows everything, but it doesn’t.
Below the neocortex is the Subcortex, this is where our emotions are locate. The brain doesn’t always consolidate memories in an explicit way (which is when we remember them), when the brain doesn’t consolidate memories like this they are implicit and are held in the sub cortex, the brain wants to protect them so it holds on to them, often to stop us feeling the pain we might feel if remember. This is the part of the brain that really does know everything, it even remembers the day we were born.
Brainspotting helps us reach these areas of the brain where the implicit memories are held and thus becomes a more effective and efficient way of working than traditional talking therapy
